Attentional Effects on Mood Are Moderated by Chronic Self-Conception Valence

چکیده

Positive and negative self -conception subjects rated their mood under either self-focused attention or other-focused attention conditions. Self-focused attention was partially induced by instructing subjects to write a story about themselves, whereas other focused attention was partially elicited by instructing subjects to write a story about an acquaintance. Attentional effects on mood were moderated by the valence of subjects' chronic selfconceptions. Under self-focused attention conditions, positive selfconception subjects reported feeling happier than nega tive selfconception subjects. However under other focused atten tion conditions, positive and negative self conception subjects did not differ in their reported mood. Supplementary analyses ruled out the possibility that the relation obtained between self conception valence and mood was mediated by the valenceof the stories that subjects wrote.

Effects of positive mood on attentional breadth for emotional stimuli

Although earlier studies have related positive emotions to attentional broadening, recent findings point out the complexity of this relation and show that these broadening effects interact with factors such as characteristics of the information that is presented. Besides stimuli characteristics, individual characteristics such as the presence of depressive symptoms could also influence the broa...

Incongruent effects of sad mood on self- conception valence: it's a matter of time

A new hypothesis is proposed to account for the relation between sad mood and selfconception valence, the first, congruency; then, incongruency' hypothesis. According to this hypothesis, sad mood initially influences the valence of open-ended self-descriptions in a mood-congruent fashion, but after a short period of time self-descriptions become mood-incongruent. Subjects were placed into a sad...

Effects of induced and naturalistic mood on the temporal allocation of attention to emotional information.

Building upon recent findings that affective states can influence the allocation of spatial attention, we investigate how state, trait and induced mood are related to the temporal allocation of attention to emotional information. In the present study, 125 unscreened undergraduates completed a modified rapid serial visual presentation task designed to assess the time course of attention to posit...

Defensive physiological reactions to rejection: the effect of self-esteem and attentional control on startle responses.

We examined the hypothesis that rejection automatically elicits defensive physiological reactions in people with low self-esteem (SE) but that attentional control moderates this effect. Undergraduates (N= 67) completed questionnaire measures of SE and attentional control. Their eye-blink responses to startle probes were measured while they viewed paintings related to rejection and acceptance th...
